20 soldiers killed in northern Afghanistan
SANAA, Oct. 29 (YPA) – At least 20 soldiers have been killed in an offensive by Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan’s northern province of Gozjan, officials said on Tuesday.
At least two soldiers disappeared after the attack on a military base in the Akshah region of the province, said Mohammad Karim Gozjani, a member of parliament’s Juzgan province and Abdul Hayat Hayat, a provincial council official.
Over the past months, the security situation in the region bordering Turkmenistan has deteriorated.
Officials say the Taliban are active in all areas of the province except the capital.
Afghan forces continue to fight Taliban and ISIS militants. Fighting has intensified this year during ongoing talks between the United States and the Taliban on a political solution to the conflict.
