Over 30 killed in air strike on detention centre in Tripoli

SANAA, July 3 (YPA) – At least 30 migrants were killed and 70 others wounded on Wednesday in an air strike Tuesday night on their detention centre in in Tajoura, in the eastern suburb of Tripoli, the capital of Libya

Government of National Accord and the Libyan army exchanged accusations of the attack.

The Presidential Council of the Government of Concord issued a statement condemning the incident, describing it as a “heinous crime”.
It also called on the UN mission in Libya to condemn the “barbaric act” and send a fact-finding committee to inspect the site.

Officials from the detention center also blamed the forces of the Marshal Khalifa Haftar, who has been fighting for nearly three months to control the capital Tripoli, AFP reported.

For his part, the Libyan National Army, led by Haftar, denied the attack on the detention center for illegal immigrants in the Tajoura suburb of the Libyan capital Tripoli.

The army accused the government forces of bombing the center after the National army carried out an accurate air strike on ammunition depots.

The UN refugee agency said it was “extremely concerned” at reports of the strikes on the migrant centre.

“UNHCR is extremely concerned about news of air strikes targeting Tajoura detention centre east of Tripoli, and accounts of refugees and migrants deceased,” it said on Twitter.

It added, “Civilians should never be a target.”
