Syria calls for UN Security Council meeting on Golan

SANAA, March 27 (YPA) – Syria has called on the UN Security Council to hold an urgent meeting over the Golan Heights. This was confirmed by the AFP based on some diplomatic sources.

Syria’s call came after U.S. President Donald Trump’s controversial decision to recognize Israeli sovereignty over the occupied Golan Heights.

On Monday, Trump signed a presidential proclamation officially recognizing Golan as Israeli territory.

The decree formalizes Trump’s statement on March 21, in which he said that the time had come for the United States to fully recognize Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan

The Golan is a Syrian territory occupied by Israel since the 5th of June 1967 and refuses to withdraw from it despite the unanimous resolution of the UN Security Council No. 497 of 17 December 1981, which calls upon Israel to abolish the annexation of the Syrian Golan Heights.
