ICRC welcomes Yemeni prisoner swap

SANAA, Dec. 6 (YPA) – The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on Thursday welcomed the signing of a prisoner exchange agreement in Yemen, voicing readiness to contribute effectively to the implementation of the exchange process.

“The ICRC has been asked to play its role as a neutral mediator and provide technical support,” said Fabrizio Carboni, regional director for the Near and Middle East at the Geneva-based ICRC, in a press statement.

“It will be of extreme importance to verify that every detainee wants to be part of the process,” Carboni added.

He told reporters earlier that the estimated number of prisoners held in Yemen “ranged from 5,000 to 8,000.”
