Venezuela demands on Brazil to protect its citizens

SANAA, Aug. 19 (YPA) Venezuela demanded on Brazil to protect its citizens after clashes that on Saturday destroyed Venezuelan immigrant shelters in two camps in a city in the north of Brazil.

Following the events, the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry contacted the Brazilian Foreign Ministry, according to a statement issued by Caracas.

During the call, Venezuela asked the Brazilian authorities to give “guarantees on Venezuelan citizens and take all measures to protect families and property and ensure their security,” the statement read.

The ministry expressed “its concern about information confirming attacks on Venezuelan migrants and mass expulsions,” warning that such incidents were ” violation of international law.”

The government of President Nicolas Maduro announced that it had instructed its consulate staff in Brazil, to look into the situation and “ensure the safety” of the Venezuelans in the region.

Since 2017, more than 127,000 Venezuelans have crossed through land border with Brazil, including 69,000 who have made their way to other countries, while the rest remain in the country neighboring their country, according to the Brazilian authorities.
