Consultative meeting in Sanaa to establish National Observatory for Children’s Rights

SANAA, Aug. 13 (YPA) – A consultative meeting was held on Monday in Sanaa for the establishment of the National Observatory for the Rights of the Child, with participation of government agencies and international and civil society organizations working in the childhood field.

“Children are the victims of the world silence towards the violations committed by Saudi Arabia in Yemen, the latest of which was the massacre of Dhahyan children,” said Dr. Abdulaziz bin Habtoor, prime minister and head of the higher council for motherhood and childhood.

Bin Habtoor called on the United Nations to take responsibility for what is happening in Yemen and stop the war.

The establishment of the National Observatory for the Rights of the Child came in response to the recommendations of the International Committee for the Rights of the Child in Geneva in the fourth report issued on February 25, 2014.

Minister of Human Rights, Aliya al-Shaabi, said “the observatory will be a real and effective on the ground and will contribute to the mitigation of violations.”

“Children are at risk,” al-Shaabi added. “Those who did not die by war have died of starvation and disease. They have been deprived of their most basic rights.”

The minister denounced the United Nations mandate to the Saudi-led coalition countries to investigate the massacre of Dhahyan children.

On Sunday, the United Nations issued a statement, in which it expressed its concern about the massacre of children in Dhahyan, and commissioned the coalition to investigate the crime.
