Resignation of school principal in Shabwa highlights worsening living crisis for educational staff

SHABWA, Aug. 30 (YPA) – Nasser al-Asa, the principal of ‘Hanishan Model Secondary School for Boys’ in the city of Ataq, has submitted his resignation from his post and the educational sector in the Saudi-controlled oil-rich Shabwa Governorate southeastern Yemen.

The decision comes amid a complete inability to meet his family’s basic needs due to deteriorating living conditions and severe poverty.

Educational sources confirmed that declining compensation for teachers in Shabwa and other Saudi-controlled areas has severely eroded their purchasing power. This economic pressure has led numerous educators in both Shabwa and Hadramout to leave the teaching profession and join Saudi-backed factions, where monthly salaries range from SAR 700 to SAR 1,000, compared to teaching wages that do not exceed SAR 150.

Al-Asa’s resignation has sparked widespread anger and condemnation among local activists and parents in Ataq, who expressed deep concern over the decline of the educational system at a time when the governorate’s natural resources continue to be depleted without benefiting basic public services.
