US Navy announces Roosevelt’s 7-month Middle East deployment amid fleet pressure

WASHINGTON, Aug. 27 (YPA) – US Navy officials announced that the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt and its 5,000-strong crew will begin a deployment to the Middle East in the coming weeks that will last at least seven months, with the crew instructed to prepare for up to eight months.

 

The deployment comes after the USS Abraham Lincoln’s more than 250-day deployment without a port call, which raised concerns about sailors’ mental health and supply shortages, along with reports of a sailor falling overboard.

 

Officials said tensions with Iran are putting pressure on the fleet, and the Navy is seeking to provide more clarity on deployment dates, although this is difficult due to combat demands.

 

The USS George Washington was scheduled to replace the Lincoln last week, while the Roosevelt is expected to replace the George Washington later. The aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush is also currently operating in the region.
