Cuba strongly condemns US decision to extend decades-long embargo

HAVANA, Aug. 26 (YPA) – Cuba has strongly condemned the United States’ decision to extend its economic, commercial, and financial embargo for another year, stating the policy “amounts to genocide” against the Cuban people for over 60 years.

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez posted Tuesday on X that the renewal of the Trading with the Enemy Act through September 2027 is “not a mere administrative procedure, but confirmation of Washington’s insistence on suffocating an entire nation.” He added that the extension comes during “the harshest moment of the US offensive against Cuba in recent years.”

Washington has long sought to weaken or overthrow the Cuban government. Havana maintains that US President Donald Trump sought to seize the country’s resources and strangle its economy, which currently faces severe fuel shortages and a worsening electricity crisis.

The US has maintained a comprehensive embargo on Cuba since 1962, renewed annually under the Trading with the Enemy Act. Havana estimates direct losses exceed $160 billion and continues to demand an end to the policy, which the United Nations has repeatedly called illegal and inhumane.
