EU calls on Israeli occupation to protect civilians after Ben-Gvir’s Gaza remarks

BRUSSELS, Aug. 19 (YPA) – European Commission spokesperson Anita Hipper called on Israel to comply with all its obligations under international law, including international humanitarian law, and to ensure the protection of civilians at all times.

Hipper made the remarks during a press conference on Tuesday in response to comments by Israeli occupation’s National Security Minister and far-right politician Itamar Ben-Gvir, who called for the killing of 30 to 40 people in Gaza every night.

Hipper said the European Commission does not comment on Ben-Gvir’s statements themselves, but stressed the European Union’s position regarding Israel’s obligations under international law and the need to protect civilians at all times.

On August 16, Ben-Gvir called for dozens of attacks on the Gaza Strip every night, including against people he said did not pose a direct threat, remarks that drew widespread condemnation and criticism.

The European Commission’s comments come amid the ongoing Israeli aggression in the Gaza Strip, backed by the United States, since October 7, 2023. According to figures cited by the sources, the offensive has killed more than 73,000 Palestinians and wounded over 174,000, most of them women and children.
