Iran, Oman reach deal on Hormuz shipping route map

TEHRAN, Aug. 16 (YPA) – Iran and Oman have reached an agreement on a shipping route map for the Strait of Hormuz after weeks of technical negotiations, Iran’s Press TV reported, citing Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei.

Earlier media reports said the two countries had reached an understanding on fully reopening the strait to maritime traffic.

The agreement is expected to be submitted to Iran’s Supreme National Security Council for approval, with an official announcement expected in the coming days.

The development comes as Washington and Tehran seek, through regional mediation, to reach a new understanding aimed at resolving the ongoing crisis.

On August 9, US President Donald Trump said Washington was engaged in talks with Tehran, describing the effort as involving “half an effort,” amid reports of worsening economic conditions in Iran.

The southern Omani route, which has been used as an alternative passage through the strait, is reportedly the most hazardous, accounting for 16 of the 18 projectile attacks reported since July 6.
