Ministry of Education condemns artillery attack on Taiz schoolchildren

TAIZ, Aug. 10 (YPA) – Sanaa’s Ministry of Education and Scientific Research condemned artillery shelling by Saudi-backed fighters that targeted students of Musab bin Umair School in Sabir Al-Mawadim district of Taiz province as they were returning home.

In a statement, the ministry said the attack killed fifth-grade student Burooj Ayman Mohammed Abdullah and injured eighth-grade student Abdulrahman Ahmed Abdulkarim, describing the incident as part of systematic attacks targeting civilians and the education sector.

It called on human rights and humanitarian organizations, the United Nations and the UN Security Council to uphold their legal and moral responsibilities to protect civilians and educational facilities.

For its part, the National Human Rights Authority’s Taiz branch also denounced the attack, calling the targeting of schoolchildren a grave violation of international and humanitarian law and the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

It called for the incident to be documented as a war crime, perpetrators to be held accountable, and measures to be taken to protect students and civilians.
