US says will slap duties on $16 bn of Chinese goods, Beijing retaliates

SANAA, Aug. 8 (YPA) – The Chinese government responded to US Slap and said Beijing will also slap additional import tariffs of 25% on $16 billion worth of US goods ranging from oil and steel products to autos and medical equipment. “This is a very unreasonable practice,” the Chinese commerce ministry said on Wednesday.

The US will begin imposing 25% duties on an additional $16 billion in Chinese imports in two weeks, escalating a trade war between the world’s two biggest economies. Customs will begin collecting the duties on 279 product lines, down from 284 items on the initial list, as of 23 August, the US Trade Representative’s Office said in an emailed statement on Tuesday. The new list covers products ranging from motorcycles to steam turbines and railway cars.
