UK rail operator restricts political badges after complaint over pro-Palestinian pin

LONDON, July 08 (YPA) – A dispute involving a British rail operator has reignited debate over the limits of political expression in the workplace after London North Eastern Railway (LNER) instructed employees not to wear pro-Palestinian badges while on duty following complaints from a passenger and a pro-Israeli occupation legal organization.

The move comes amid broader debate in Britain over the display of political symbols in public-facing workplaces, particularly since the outbreak of the Israeli aggression on Gaza war in 2023, when expressions of solidarity with either Palestinians or Israel became the subject of legal and public scrutiny.

According to Middle East Eye, the issue arose after a passenger complained about a catering employee on an LNER train wearing a badge featuring the logo of the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union alongside the words Solidarity with Palestine.

The incident occurred on June 14 aboard a train traveling from London to Edinburgh. The passenger, who identified as Jewish, said he felt uncomfortable and unwelcome after seeing the political badge while being served.

The group UK Lawyers for Israeli occupation subsequently filed a formal complaint, arguing that political symbols worn by staff interacting directly with passengers could create an uncomfortable environment for some customers.

LNER said it had not introduced a specific ban on pro-Palestinian badges but was enforcing its long-standing uniform policy.

Under the rules, employees wearing company uniforms may display only one lapel pin, which must either be company-approved, linked to an official corporate campaign, or represent an authorized trade union emblem.

The company added that employees are not permitted to wear unauthorized badges or political symbols while representing the company in public-facing roles.

UK Lawyers for Israeli occupation welcomed the decision, saying public transport employees should provide services to all passengers without displaying political messages.

The report noted that the RMT union has been among the most vocal British trade unions supporting pro-Palestinian demonstrations since the war in Gaza began, having issued statements critical of Israeli aggression and encouraged members to participate in solidarity events.
