Millions of people join main funeral procession for Imam Khamenei in Tehran

TEHRAN, July 06 (YPA) –Millions of people from different countries around  the world filled the streets of Tehran on Monday morning as the coffin of the martyred Leader of the Islamic Revolution Imam Ali Khamenei, was carried in a historic funeral procession toward Azadi Square, Iranian media reported.

Crowds surged across the Iranian capital as the procession began, in what officials described as the largest public turnout in the country’s modern history.

The funeral-related events had begun on Friday, with foreign delegations and officials reportedly attending memorial events.

After the main funeral procession on Monday, the cortege will travel to the holy city of Qom on Tuesday. Funeral and tribute ceremonies will then continue in the Iraqi cities of Najaf and Karbala on Wednesday at the request of Iraqi religious and political leaders, before concluding with the burial of Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei at the holy shrine of Imam Reza (AS) in Mashhad on Thursday.

The funeral ceremonies are taking place during a pivotal stage for the Islamic Republic of Iran’s leadership, with large crowds gathering from inside Iran and abroad.

The gatherings reflect the cohesion and popular support of the state following the recent escalations, including a 12-day war with “Israel” in June 2025 and a subsequent US-Israeli attack, which is currently under a ceasefire.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed at his workplace at the “House of Leadership” while performing his duties, following what they described as a US-Israeli strike in the early hours of Saturday, February 28.
