MONTREAL, June 30 (YPA) – A coalition of international human rights organizations, led by the Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights, has requested the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate senior officials from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and several regional nations for allegedly financing and supplying war crimes in Sudan’s Darfur region.
The submission, filed under Article 15 of the Rome Statute, accuses foreign actors of providing weapons, drones, mercenaries, and logistical support to both the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) despite a United Nations arms embargo.
The filing indicated that the RSF received support via networks spanning the UAE, Libya, Chad, Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya, and Uganda, citing documentation and transit maps from airports in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and Ras Al Khaimah. Concurrently, it alleged that Iran, Turkey, and Egypt provided military assistance to the SAF.
Citing Articles 25(3)(c) and 25(3)(d) of the Rome Statute regarding individual criminal responsibility for aiding, abetting, or contributing to a common criminal purpose, the coalition urged the ICC Prosecutor to probe these external networks to curb the ongoing civilian casualties in Sudan.
