BEIRUT, June 29 (YPA) – Lebanon’s Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri criticized on Sunday the proposed framework agreement, describing it as “dictates” that are “ten times worse” than the 1983 May 17 agreement.
In remarks to the Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar, Berri warned against any street protests or reactions that could be exploited to fuel internal unrest and instability, stressing that the agreement’s greatest danger lies not only in its political provisions but also in its potential to deepen domestic divisions and push Lebanon toward internal confrontation.
He said opposition to the agreement should remain within constitutional and political institutions, noting that ministers affiliated with the Amal Movement would attend any cabinet session discussing the deal and oppose it through official channels. Berri expressed confidence that the agreement would ultimately fail to be implemented.
The parliament speaker also rejected reports about a possible dismissal of Army Commander Rodolphe Haykal, emphasizing that the Lebanese army is a “red line” and a key pillar of national stability and civil peace.
Following the announcement of the agreement, Berri warned of the dangers of internal strife, urging Lebanese citizens to avoid being drawn into divisions that could threaten the country’s stability.
