US base in Bahrain taken out of service after Iranian strikes

WASHINGTON, June 27 (YPA) – The US naval and air facility in Bahrain reportedly sustained significant damage during Iranian strikes, according to The Wall Street Journal’s report, raising concerns about its operational readiness.

According to the report, the US Navy has not officially confirmed the extent of the reported damage. However, the newspaper said the attacks caused significant destruction to key facilities, including the naval command headquarters, training complex, port infrastructure, barracks, and storage facilities.

The base, which hosts the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet and has been operational in Bahrain since 1995, is considered one of Washington’s most important military installations in the Gulf. Located approximately 240 kilometers from the Iranian coast, it can accommodate various classes of US naval vessels.

The report noted that the total investment in the facility is estimated at around $400 million.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) had previously announced that it targeted the US military base and the Fifth Fleet headquarters in Bahrain with missiles and drones in response to US strikes against Iran.

Separately, The New York Times reported that the full extent of the damage remains difficult to assess.

According to a congressional official cited by the newspaper, a Pentagon assessment submitted to Congress estimated the cost of damage from the strike on the Fifth Fleet headquarters at almost $200 million.
