Government Media Office warns of deepening hunger, humanitarian crisis in Gaza

GAZA, May 24 (YPA) – Dr. Ismail Al-Thawabta, Director of Gaza’s Government Media Office, said on Sunday that the hunger crisis in the Gaza Strip has worsened due to a “deliberate reduction” in the entry of humanitarian and food aid into the territory.

According to Al-Thawabta, since the ceasefire agreement came into effect, the Israeli occupation has allowed the entry of only 48,636 trucks out of the 131,400 trucks that were supposed to enter, representing a compliance rate of no more than 37%.

He added,  “This means that more than 63% of the essential humanitarian needs have been prevented from entering.”

“During the period from the beginning of May 2026 until May 18, only 2,719 trucks entered out of the 10,800 trucks that were expected to enter, with the compliance rate dropping to just 25%. This constitutes an extremely dangerous indicator reflecting the escalating policy of deliberately restricting and rationing humanitarian aid.”

Al-Thawabta said the figures confirm that the occupation is pursuing a systematic policy of using food, medicine, and humanitarian aid as tools of pressure and political blackmail against civilians.

He also warned of a worsening famine and growing rates of malnutrition, particularly among children, the sick, and the elderly, amid the collapse of healthcare services, disruption of cold storage systems, and acute fuel shortages.
