QUDS, May 20 (YPA) – The Israeli occupation forces on Wednesday detained and assaulted activists participating in the Global Sumud Flotilla after intercepting their vessels en route to the besieged Gaza Strip, according to media reports.
The occupation’s media said that activists were transferred to Ashdod Port, where Israeli occupation’s National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir was present during the operation.
Videos circulated online appeared to show detained activists handcuffed on the ground while Israeli flags and the national anthem were displayed and played nearby.
According to reports, some activists chanted slogans in support of Palestine before clashes occurred with the occupation prison personnel. Israeli Transport Minister Miri Regev described the flotilla participants as “saboteurs and anarchists” during her visit to Ashdod Port.
The occupation’s authorities announced earlier that naval forces had taken control of more than 40 vessels participating in the flotilla and detained hundreds of activists aboard the ships.
Organizers said communication with several participants had been lost and held Israel responsible for their safety.
The flotilla had set sail in an attempt to challenge the blockade on Gaza and deliver humanitarian aid to the territory.
