Amnesty International calls for holding “Israel” accountable for demolishing homes in Quneitra

QUNEITRA, May 14 (YPA) – Amnesty International called on Thursday for an investigation into what it described as the deliberate destruction by the Israeli occupation army of civilian homes in Syria’s Quneitra province in southern Syria, stating that it may constitute war crimes and was carried out without absolute military necessity.

The organization said that Israeli forces have destroyed or damaged at least 23 civilian buildings in three villages over the past six months.

It added that it was able to verify the damage to the buildings in these villages using satellite imagery, according to a statement.

It said: “Israel has an obligation to provide reparations for these serious violations of international humanitarian law.”

In this context, the deputy regional director for the Middle East and North Africa at the organization, Kristine Beckerle, said: “Israel cannot use securing its borders as a justification for demolishing people’s homes and villages and blowing them up in another country’s territory.”

It is worth noting that Israel carries out repeated incursions into Syrian territory, particularly in the Quneitra province, stating that it seeks to establish a “demilitarized zone” in southern Syria.

Its ongoing violations of Syrian sovereignty include ground incursions, the establishment of temporary checkpoints, road closures, as well as raids and arrests targeting Syrian civilians.
