PARIS, May 07 (YPA) – The European Affairs Committee of the French National Assembly has officially rejected a draft resolution calling for the suspension of the European Union’s partnership agreement with “Israel.”
The proposal was introduced in response to ongoing violations in the Gaza Strip and reported breaches of international law and human rights.
The vote highlighted a sharp political divide within the Assembly; while leftist deputies supported the motion, it was ultimately defeated by opposing votes from far-right and centrist blocs. This legislative failure comes amid a dire humanitarian crisis, with reports indicating that the death toll in Gaza has exceeded 72,000 since the beginning of the conflict.
Following the session, Sabrina Sebaihi, an MP for the Green Party, fiercely criticized the outcome, labeling the committee’s decision as “disgusting.” She accused the French political establishment of ignoring the human tragedy unfolding in Gaza and Lebanon, stating that while officials debate in comfort, “children and women are dying, and hospitals are no longer able to provide services.”
This development reflects the broader gridlock within the European Union. Although several member states have called for a partial or full suspension of ties with “Israel,” the EU’s requirement for “unanimous consent” has effectively stalled any practical action. The French committee’s rejection has sparked a renewed wave of criticism regarding Paris’s commitment to international law and its stance on the ongoing war.
