Transport Ministry: Yemen losses hit $23.2 billion after 11 years of war, blockade

SANAA, May 06 (YPA) – The Sanaa-based Ministry of Transport and Public Works said cumulative losses across its sectors over 11 years of war and blockade imposed by the Saudi-led coalition have reached $23.22 billion, including $19.13 billion in transport and $4.1 billion in the road sector.

At a press conference on Wednesday, the ministry detailed losses of $8.79 billion at Red Sea ports, $4.82 billion in maritime affairs, $2.88 billion in airlines, and more than $1.25 billion in civil aviation, in addition to $371 million in road transport.

In the roads sector, it reported the destruction of 102 bridges and 8,185 kilometers of roads. Reconstruction costs were estimated at $462 million for bridges and $1.64 billion for roads, while total direct and indirect losses reached $3.93 billion.

Losses incurred by the General Corporation for Roads and Bridges were put at $168.3 million, including $54.7 million in direct damage and $113.6 million in indirect losses.

The ministry added that human losses reached 287 deaths, while more than 8,000 people were unable to perform Hajj, and over two-thirds of the population were affected by air transport restrictions and the shutdown of most airports.
