Iran holds US responsible for Hormuz security, asserts sovereignty

NEW YORK, April 28 (YPA) – Iran’s mission to the United Nations has held the United States fully responsible for any security breaches in the Strait of Hormuz, citing “hostile US policies” as the direct cause of threats to international navigation.

In a formal statement, the mission clarified that Iran is not a party to the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and is therefore not bound by its provisions.

The statement emphasized Tehran’s legitimate right, as the primary coastal state, to take all necessary measures to protect the strait’s security and exercise its sovereign rights to ensure the stability of maritime traffic in the Gulf.
