GENEVA, April 21 (YPA) – Ben Saul, the special rapporteur on the promotion and protection of human rights while countering terrorism, has described the US blockade of the Strait of Hormuz as illegal under international law.
“The US blockade in the Strait of Hormuz is not “legal” under international law – it continues the US’ illegal aggression against Iran, regardless if it complies with the separate law of naval warfare,” Ben Saul said in a post on X on Monday.
His remarks highlight a growing legal debate over the legitimacy of military and naval actions in the region, amid increasing international calls for de-escalation and adherence to international law.
These remarks come amid escalating regional tensions, which reportedly began on February 28, when the United States and “Israel” launched a new 40-day military aggression against Iran that resulted in thousands of civilian casualties and targeted schools, hospitals, mosques, and other civilian infrastructure.
