Lebanon resistance strikes turn Israeli settlements into displacement zones

SANAA, April 15 (YPA) – Israeli occupation’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s assurances to secure the settlements in the northern Occupied Palestinian territories are fading amid worsening conditions on the ground and in the economy, which contradict these promises.

This situation is compounded by ongoing strikes from the Lebanese resistance and their escalating impacts across various fronts.

In this context, the Hebrew “Kan channel” reported a clear economic downturn and increasing population displacement in the northern frontline settlements. There are growing calls within Israel to develop an urgent rescue and reconstruction plan for these areas, which are currently paralyzed.

Robbie Hammerschlag, the channel’s correspondent in the North, noted that while the end of the conflict remains uncertain, planning for the “day after” has become critical due to the lack of a clear government strategy to rehabilitate and strengthen these settlements’ resilience.

Statistics highlight the severity of the crisis: 84% of business owners in these frontline settlements experienced revenue declines over the past year because of the war, and about 70% had to reduce their operations or seek aid, signaling a serious blow to the local economy.

On the population front, Kiryat Shmona’s residents have dropped from around 23,000 before the war to about 10,000 now, with further displacement expected in the coming months, clearly showing a loss of security confidence.

To address the crisis, proposals include establishing a free trade zone in Kiryat Shmona and enhancing security by building shelters and protected areas. However, these plans underscore the extent of the existing security shortcomings.

Confidence in leadership is also waning, exemplified by the mayor of Kiryat Shmona, Avichai Stern, canceling his participation in a Knesset session after his request to join via Zoom was denied—an indication of the deepening crisis.

Overall, these indicators show that Netanyahu’s security promises to the northern settlements are increasingly unraveling, as the harsh realities on the ground create new challenges and place the Israeli leadership under pressure to restore public trust and deliver effective solutions to the growing crisis.
