German authorities ban pro-Gaza demonstration in front of former Nazi Buchenwald camp

BERLIN, April 11 (YPA) – German authorities, backed by a court ruling, have banned a pro-Gaza demonstration was planned to take place in front of the former Nazi Buchenwald concentration camp.

Activists subsequently decided to relocate the protest on Sunday to the nearby city of Weimar.

The demonstration, organized under the name “Keffiyehs in Buchenwald,” sparked controversy in Germany, with politicians condemning it as inappropriate.

The Weimar court supported an earlier decision to prohibit the protest at the memorial site and instead move it to a square in the city, according to a ruling.

The former Nazi concentration camp, now a memorial and museum, is located on the outskirts of the German city.

Activists said the protest aimed to commemorate the victims of “genocide and fascism” and to campaign “against all genocides, especially the ongoing genocide in Palestine.”

However, the court upheld the police ban, ruling that holding the protest at the camp could violate the dignity of victims of the Nazi regime.

It also noted that the keffiyeh carries political symbolism that could affect visitors’ sense of security, particularly Jewish visitors.

The campaign did not immediately comment on the ruling but had previously accused site authorities of attempting to “distort history” amid restrictions on political activities at the memorial.
