NATO chief faces backlash after backing US strikes against Iran

BEIRUT, March 26 (YPA) –  NATO General Secretary Mark Rutte is facing mounting internal criticism and unprecedented pressure following his public backing of military operations led by US President Donald Trump against Iran, amid accusations he has overstepped his legal and constitutional authority.

According to The New York Times, citing diplomatic sources, several member states have voiced dissatisfaction with the Secretary General’s stance, arguing that engaging in a conflict with Tehran does not fall under the NATO’s “collective defense” provisions.

Opponents within NATO warn that the position could set a dangerous precedent, shifting the alliance away from its traditional defensive mandate and placing it in direct confrontation in ways that may violate international law.

European officials also warned that continued escalation could have far-reaching consequences, including the risk of a broader regional war with unpredictable outcomes, a prolonged surge in global oil and gas prices that could undermine economic growth and push markets toward recession, and deepening divisions within the NATO.

Reports indicate that a majority of member states view the ongoing conflict as a clear violation of international law and fear NATO could be drawn into a war that does not serve European security interests. Officials also warn such a scenario could increase refugee flows and disrupt key global trade routes.

The controversy comes as military operations in the region intensify, placing the future of transatlantic cooperation at stake and raising questions about the Secretary General’s ability to remain in office amid widening divisions within the NATO .
