On Mother’s Day: 39 Palestinian mothers remain in Israeli prisons amid escalating violations
OCCUPIED PALESTINE, March 21 (YPA) – As the world marks Mother’s Day, dozens of Palestinian women remain in Israeli prisons, where motherhood is overshadowed by harsh conditions, combining the pain of separation with the pressures of detention and increasingly severe restrictions.
In a statement, the Palestinian Prisoner Society reported that 39 Palestinian mothers remain held in Israeli prisons, out of 79 female detainees, amid an ongoing war against prisoners.
The Society said that imprisoned mothers represent part of a social structure subjected to compounded targeting. This group includes mothers of prisoners and those killed by Israeli forces, wives of prisoners and former detainees, and sisters of martyrs and prisoners, in addition to women working in vital sectors, including journalists, teachers, lawyers, activists, doctors, academics, and homemakers.
It affirmed that imprisoned mothers, like other detainees, are subjected to a comprehensive system of violations, including torture, starvation, denial of medical treatment, and solitary confinement, alongside systematic repression and abuse.
The Society noted that most of the imprisoned mothers are held under administrative detention or on charges related to what Israeli authorities claim is “incitement” on social media platforms, within a policy that targets the digital space as an additional tool of repression.
The Society added that hundreds of Palestinian mothers have been detained since the beginning of the war, including women from the Gaza Strip who were later released, among them elderly women, reflecting the widening scope of targeting.
The Palestinian Prisoner’s Society stressed that the detention of Palestinian mothers constitutes part of a broader campaign targeting the Palestinian presence, calling for pressure to secure the immediate release of female prisoners, halt systematic abuses against them, and end the unprecedented escalation in arrests of Palestinian women.
