US embassy’s air defense system in Baghdad targeted in drone attack

BAGHDAD, March 14 (YPA) – A drone struck the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad’s Green Zone at dawn on Saturday, damaging part of the diplomatic compound’s air-defense system after the defenses failed to intercept the aircraft.

The incident marks the second such attack since the start of the military escalation involving Iran on one side and the United States and Israel on the other.

Following the attack, the U.S. Embassy issued a security alert urging American citizens to leave Iraq immediately.

Security sources said the strike directly targeted the embassy’s perimeter and destroyed part of its defense system. Technical teams have since begun working to activate an alternative air-defense system.

The attack coincided with sirens sounding throughout the Green Zone and plumes of smoke rising from inside the complex.

The incident came amid escalating regional tensions and growing concerns that the confrontation could expand to include U.S. positions and bases across the region.
