IRGC launches military drills in Strait of Hormuz amid diplomatic push in Switzerland

TEHRAN, Feb. 16 (YPA) – The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has commenced large-scale military maneuvers in the Strait of Hormuz, the Persian Gulf, and the Sea of Oman.

The drills aim to bolster combat readiness against what Tehran describes as “potential security and military threats,” following a buildup of the U.S. naval presence in the region.

These exercises coincide with the eve of the second round of indirect talks between Tehran and Washington, hosted in Switzerland and mediated by Oman.

This mobilization is the first of its kind since the military confrontation last June, which involved U.S. participation in strikes against Iranian nuclear facilities.

The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical global artery, carrying approximately 20% of the world’s oil supply, with Tehran repeatedly hinting at its closure should tensions escalate further.

According to state television, the maneuvers are being conducted under the supervision of IRGC Commander Mohammad Pakpour. The drills are viewed as an attempt to restore military leverage as diplomatic contacts—which resumed in Muscat on February 6th—continue, following the collapse of the Spring 2025 negotiations and the subsequent outbreak of hostilities.
