Int’l organization calls for independent investigation into use of lethal force in Shabwa

LONDOND, Feb. 12 (YPA) – The UK-based ‘Front Line’ human rights organization has condemned the use of “lethal force” against peaceful protesters in Ataq city, capital of Shabwa governorate, eastern Yemen, during “Southern Martyr’s Day” commemorations.

In a report, the organization stated that the use of live ammunition against unarmed civilians resulted in dozens of casualties. It characterized the crackdown as a “flagrant violation of the right to life” and a departure from international policing standards.

Front Line held the civil and security leadership responsible, citing the issuance of orders—or the failure to prevent—the use of deadly force.

The organization linked the escalation to Saudi Arabia’s influential role in Southern Yemen’s security landscape and held the Saudi-backed Presidential Leadership Council accountable for failing to protect the right to peaceful assembly.

Local medical and human rights sources confirmed that violent clashes broke out Wednesday near the Governor’s office between security forces and protesters. The current toll stands at 6 deaths and over 20 injured.

The organization concluded by calling for an independent international investigation, describing the events in Shabwa as part of a recurring pattern of “institutional violence and systematic impunity.”
