Yemen braces for new dust storm, cold snap starting Wednesday

SANAA, Jan. 25 (YPA) – Yemeni astronomer Adnan Al-Shawafi has announced that a dry, cold air mass carrying heavy dust is expected to reach Yemeni airspace starting Wednesday, January 28.

This comes amid official warnings of widespread weather fluctuations, including a significant drop in temperatures and disrupted maritime navigation.

High-density dust is anticipated in Mahra and Hadramout governorates. Medium-density dust is expected in Shabwa, Saada, Al-Jawf, Marib, Lahj, and Taiz due to active surface winds.

The National Meteorological and Early Warning Center issued alerts for cold weather across the highlands and deserts, with potential frost formation in mountain basins. Additionally, choppy seas and high waves are expected near Bab al-Mandab and the southern Red Sea coast.

Farmers have been urged to take necessary precautions to protect their crops from the combined effects of frost and wind activity.

Al-Shawafi noted that while the weather event is classified as “Level 1” (mild), it requires vigilance—especially for children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions. Authorities advise all citizens and travelers to stay updated with the latest weather bulletins.
