Major NATO exercise to take place in Germany

BRUSSEL, Jan. 15 (YPA) – NATO has begun sending 10,000 troops, equipment, and vehicles into Germany for a major military exercise in the coming weeks amid the dispute over Greenland’s status.

Dozens of vehicles belonging to an Italian military unit were unloaded, on Thursday morning, from a cargo ship at the port of Emden in northwestern Germany.

According to the alliance’s Joint Force Command in the Dutch town of Brunssum, this marks the start of overt operations in Germany.

Germany is hosting the exercise, dubbed Steadfast Dart 26, which is NATO’s largest training exercise this year, whereas eleven member nations are taking part in the exercise with units from their army, air force, navy, space force, and cyber forces.

The operations come amid a deep rift within the alliance over the future of the largely self-governing Arctic island of Greenland, which is part of the Kingdom of Denmark.

It is worth mentioning that president Donald Trump is seeking to take control of Greenland, while European countries warn that any US move to seize Greenland could mean the end of NATO.
