The Wall Street Journal: Washington to announce next phase of Gaza plan today

WASHINGTON, Jan. 14 (YPA) -The Trump administration plans to announce on Wednesday the move to the next phase of the Gaza plan, The Wall Street Journal, reported, citing US officials.

The step reflects a new US approach to the political, security, and humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip amid the complexities of the regional and international scene.

According to officials, the next phase of the plan will coincide with the appointment of Nikolay Mladenov as the UN Special Coordinator for Gaza, as part of efforts to restructure monitoring and oversight mechanisms and give them a clearer political and diplomatic dimension.

The appointment is seen as a sign of the US administration’s push toward new arrangements for managing the situation in the Gaza Strip and addressing existing security, humanitarian, and political challenges.

The newspaper noted that the selection of Mladenov, who has previously held prominent international positions and has been involved in sensitive regional issues, reflects an attempt to provide the US plan with broader political and international backing and to open channels of communication with multiple parties involved in the Gaza file.

In the same context, The New York Times, citing informed officials, reported that the United States is moving toward forming a committee of Palestinian technocrats to manage daily affairs in the devastated Gaza Strip as part of arrangements linked to the ceasefire plan.

The ceasefire plan, which took effect in October with support from US President Donald Trump, stipulates that the committee should remain nonpolitical, with its role limited to providing public services and managing civil affairs.
