SANAA, Nov. 17 (YPA) – The Sanaa-based Shura Council strongly condemned on Monday the UN Security Council’s decision to impose new sanctions on Yemen.
In a statement, the Council described the decision as unfair and reflected a clear bias towards the aggressor states that have been waging a comprehensive military and economic war on the Yemeni people for over ten years.
The statement affirmed that the UN resolution ignored the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Yemen and aligned itself with the interests of the Saudi-US-led coalition, and proved beyond any doubt that the Security Council has transformed from a body tasked with maintaining international peace and security into a tool that provides political cover for the ongoing violations against the Yemeni people.
It clarified that the ongoing sanctions without a genuine review of the situation on the ground and determining the responsibilities of the parties involved in the aggression and blockade is a serious violation of the UN Charter and the international law, in addition to the double standards in the Security Council’s approach to the aggression against Yemen.
The council’s statement explained that the resolution directly served the coalition states, which has destroyed infrastructure and led to the greatest humanitarian catastrophe for the Yemeni people, and contributed to tightening the economic and political noose around Sanaa, crippling the Yemeni state’s ability to fulfill its obligations towards its citizens.
