Taiz residents face financial exploitation by UAE electricity company

TAIZ, Nov. 10 (YPA) – Widespread complaints have been filed by residents of Mocha district and the surrounding Tihama region west of Taiz province against the Emirati company ‘Go Green Power’.

The residents accused the company of imposing exorbitant and unjustified monthly fees and subscriptions for its prepaid electricity service.

The subscriptions were forced to pay a fixed subscription fee of 2,000 Yemeni riyals per month, which equals $8.39, in addition to prepaying the cost of their electricity consumption.

The company was accused of opaque practices, including deducting more than 5,000 Yemeni riyals monthly from prepaid balances under the heading “meter payment,” without providing statements, explaining the deduction mechanism, or indicating the remaining payment period.

The residents also urged the UAE-backed local authorities to intervene immediately to review the terms of the contract with the company and reveal its true nature.

They asserted that what began as “free electricity” has transformed into an investment project exploiting people’s need for a basic service.

The subscriptions also point to the recent imposition of tariffs in US dollars and Saudi riyals on commercial establishments.
