At least 20 passengers killed in Abyan traffic accident

ABYAN, Nov. 05 (YPA) – At least 20 passengers, including women and children, were killed on Wednesday in a traffic accident in Abyan province, south of Yemen.

The accident happened following a collision between two buses, one of them is public transport bus, on mountainous Al-Arqoub road of the province.

Reports indicate that the fatal factor was the failure of the automatic safety system on the bus’s door after the collision, causing it to close tightly and trapping the passengers inside the inferno.

The tragedy began when the brakes of the transport bus failed as it descended a steep mountain slope, leading to a loss of control, a collision, and a rollover, before the bus burst into flames.

A few passengers managed to escape by breaking windows and jumping out.

The incident raises serious questions about the neglect of safety standards in public transport and the inspection bodies responsible for granting operating licenses to buses.
