DUBLIN, Aug. 05 (YPA) – Irish President Michael Higgins called on the UN Secretary-General on Tuesday to invoke Chapter VII of the UN Charter against the Zionist entity, even if the Security Council opposes it.
Higgins said in a radio interview, “UN Secretary-General António Guterres must invoke Chapter VII measures against Israel. Guterres must act in accordance with the UN Charter, even if the Security Council prevents him.”
Chapter VII of the UN Charter authorizes the Security Council to “determine the existence of any threat to the peace, breach of the peace, or act of aggression” and to take military and civilian measures “to restore international peace and security.”
Higgins explained that Guterres has the right to mobilize international support even in the event of a veto in the Security Council. “I (referring to Guterres) cannot stand and give a speech while I see this massive devastation being inflicted on a nation,” he said.
The Irish president also added, “6,000 aid trucks have been prevented from entering Gaza. This is appalling.”
