DAMASCUS, July 20 (YPA) – US Special Envoy to Syria Thomas Barak announced the reaching of a ceasefire agreement between the Syrian government and the Israeli occupation, following direct negotiations with US support and the participation of several regional parties.
In a post on the X, Barak said that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the head of the transitional phase in Syria, Ahmed al-Sharaa, reached a ceasefire agreement between the two countries, describing the agreement as a great achievement, which may pave the way for a new phase of stability in the region.
The US envoy explained that the agreement enjoyed supporting and endorsement of Turkey, Jordan, and a number of neighboring countries, noting that the regional consensus reflected a collective will to end the state of hostility and begin a new chapter of calm, after years of tension and clashes on the Syrian-Israeli border.
In a related context, Barak called on all Syrian communities, including the Druze, Bedouins, and Sunnis, as stated in his statement, to “lay down their weapons and engage in efforts to build a new, unified Syrian state.”
He called for mutual respect among Syrians and joint action for a future of peace and prosperity, stressing that the United States would continue to support reconstruction efforts and national dialogue, as well as stability in Syria and the region.
