LONDON, July 06 (YPA) – The British MP Richard Burgon has called on the government to adopt a “clear stance” and make a “moral and political decision” to halt arms exports to “Israel.”
His call followed the British Supreme Court’s announcement last Monday, rejecting a lawsuit aimed at stopping weapons shipments to Israeli entity and ruling that the matter of exporting military equipment, including components related to F-35 fighter jets, falls under the jurisdiction of legislative and executive authorities rather than the judiciary.
Burgon warned that if the government fails to address the issue, he will push for a parliamentary vote on the matter.
After the ruling, he participated in a press conference outside the court building where he spoke to “Anadolu Agency”, emphasizing that the judgment should not be interpreted as “an excuse to evade responsibility.”
He stated that some within the government might feel relieved by this decision, but cautioned that such sentiment would be “a grave mistake.” The court, Burgon added, clearly noted that the continuation of exporting spare parts for F-35 jets is not within the judiciary’s remit.
Burgon reiterated that decisions concerning military equipment exports must be resolved by both the government and parliament.
