Sanaa demands participation in UN envoy’s monthly briefings to Security Council

SANAA, July 02 (YPA) – The Sanaa government urged allowing it to participate in the UN envoy’s monthly Yemen briefings to the UN Security Council to provide accurate, comprehensive updates instead of relying on a single party’s narrative that doesn’t truly represent Yemeni territory.

This came in a letter addressed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Sanaa on Wednesday to the President of the UN Security Council, in which the ministry refuted the allegations made in the speech of the representative of the government loyal to the Saudi-led coalition during the Security Council session on the protection of civilians and humanitarian workers.

The letter stated that these allegations contained false claims that needed to be corrected based on established facts and the reality on the ground in Yemen.

The letter included a comprehensive refutation of those fallacies, emphasizing that characterizing the Yemeni crisis as a “militia coup against legitimacy” ignores the roots of the problem. It explained that the September 21, 2014, revolution came in response to ongoing political and economic failure and widespread corruption, in addition to popular demands for reform and change.

It also considered that speaking of “constitutional legitimacy” in isolation from the popular will constitutes a violation of the principles of good governance, noting that Security Council Resolution 2216 of 2015 was exploited as a cover to justify military aggression and blockade, exacerbating human suffering rather than encouraging peaceful solutions.

Regarding political solutions, the letter stressed the importance of reaching a political settlement free from external dictates and interests unrelated to the Yemeni people. It added that allegations that the Sanaa government is the cause of the humanitarian suffering represent an attempt to distort the facts and cover up the violations suffered by the Yemeni people as a result of the aggression and the imposed blockade.

The letter attributed the true roots of the humanitarian crisis to the comprehensive blockade, which has led to the destruction of infrastructure, paralyzed the economy, and caused a shortage of basic commodities, forcing millions into displacement and creating one of the worst humanitarian disasters.

It also emphasized that the summer activities organized by the Sanaa government aim to promote patriotic and moral principles among youth, as is the case in many countries, and condemned the attempts to distort the narrative associated with them.

On the issue of landmines, the letter explained that it is a direct result of the external aggression, as many mines have been planted in the occupied provinces (controlled by the pro-coalition forces). It also pointed to the failure of the international community and donor countries to support mine clearance programs due to the pro-coalition government pressure against Sanaa.

The letter rejected allegations of alleged Iranian military and financial support for the Sanaa government, stressing that the aim of these allegations is to divert attention from the aggression and blockade imposed since 2015. It highlighted that the Sanaa government’s military capabilities have been developed independently to protect the country’s sovereignty, free from any foreign interference.

The letter concluded by emphasizing that the continuation of the aggression is a result of the parties’ insistence on the use of force and their rejection of peaceful solutions. It also noted US pressure on Saudi Arabia to obstruct peace efforts due to Sanaa’s position rejecting the genocide being committed by the Zionist occupation in Gaza.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs called on the Security Council to seriously address its letter dated June 21, 2025, in which it demanded a rectification of the legal status and granting Yemen’s seat at the United Nations to the Sanaa government or declaring the seat temporarily vacant to preserve the organization’s credibility.
