Aden-based Prisons Authority declares to halt services in prisoners

SANAA, April 28 (YPA) – The Aden-based Prisons Authority and other provinces, which are talking over coalition, announced a halt to the admission of new prisoners starting on Monday.

The Authority said in a statement that this step came in protest against the “coalition-backed Aden government’s” failure to disburse its budget for the second consecutive month.

The statement warned of the serious repercussions for services provided to prisoners if its unspent budget for March and April remains suspended.

It threatened to suspend all activities, including visits by international and local organizations, and to limit visits to families to urgent humanitarian cases.

The authority stated that visits would cease completely starting next week if its budget keeps suspended.

The statement noted that the unprecedented escalation of protests by the Authority’s leadership may portend angry protests in prisons under the control of the Aden government, coinciding with the economic collapse and the government’s inability to buy a fuel shipment for power plants in Aden and other provinces.
