WORLD, April 25 (YPA) – China on Thursday said that there were no ongoing discussions with the US on tariffs, despite indications from the White House this week that there would be some easing in tensions with Beijing.
“At present there are absolutely no negotiations on the economy and trade between China and the US,” Ministry of Commerce spokesperson He Yadong told reporters in Mandarin.
He added that “all sayings” regarding progress on bilateral talks should be dismissed.
“If the US really wants to resolve the problem … it should cancel all the unilateral measures on China,” he said.
The remarks came in response to recent statements by US President Donald Trump, who hinted at the possibility of reaching an agreement with Beijing to reduce the tariffs previously imposed on Chinese goods.
Media reports also indicated that Beijing has called on the United States to “cancel all unilateral measures” if it truly wants to “resolve the issue.”
Earlier, Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed China’s willingness to work with other nations to confront global challenges through unity and cooperation.
He emphasized the importance of protecting legitimate rights and interests, supporting international trade rules, and upholding global fairness and justice.
On Wednesday, The Wall Street Journal reported that the White House is considering reducing tariffs on Chinese goods by 50% to 65%.
Throughout the week, both former President Donald Trump and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent have suggested that tensions with China might be easing.
