As it enters famine phase, Gaza faces unprecedented humanitarian disaster

SANAA, April 01 (YPA) – Gaza is experiencing catastrophic humanitarian conditions, effectively entering a famine phase, due to the ongoing Israeli blockade and the ban on the entry of food and fuel, which has led to the closure of all bakeries supported by the World Food Programme.

The program confirmed that the remaining supplies are only sufficient for two weeks, while the last food parcels will be distributed within the next two days, foreshadowing an unprecedented tragedy.

International warnings of a food catastrophe

The UN Special Rapporteur on the right to food, Michael Fakhri, said on Tuesday that all bakeries in the Gaza Strip have closed, confirming that the Strip is on the brink of famine.

Fakhri added, “The International Court of Justice has recognized the existence of famine in Gaza,” stressing that “Israel is using food as a weapon and committing genocide.”

He emphasized that “Israel does not respect international law or UN resolutions,” calling on the international community to exert political and economic pressure on Israel to halt its systematic starvation policy.

Bakeries closed and supplies ran out

Earlier Tuesday, the Gaza Bakery Owners Association announced the closure of the last operating bakeries due to a shortage of flour, cooking gas, and fuel.

The association called on the international community to urgently intervene to open the crossings and deliver aid, particularly flour, to save millions of Palestinians from the threat of starvation.

Escalation of Israeli aggression

This comes as the Israeli occupation forces resumed their aggression on the Gaza Strip at dawn on March 18, following a two-month hiatus under a ceasefire agreement that went into effect on January 19.

However, the occupying entity repeatedly violated the terms of the agreement, prompting calls for urgent international intervention to halt the Zionist violations and deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza before it’s too late.

Benjamin Netanyahu’s government is refusing to implement the second phase of the agreement, seeking to release more prisoners held by the resistance without fulfilling its obligations, most notably ending the war and fully withdrawing from the Gaza Strip.

Ongoing genocide

Since October 7, 2023, with American and European support, the Israeli occupation forces have been committing genocide against the people of Gaza, resulting in the killing and injury of more than 164,000 Palestinians, most of them children and women, in addition to the loss of more than 14,000 lives amid massive destruction of infrastructure.

Amid these conditions, warnings are growing of an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe, calling for urgent international intervention to halt Israeli violations and deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza before it’s too late.
