Local currency collapse drives traders in Aden to general strike

ADEN, Jan. 15 (YPA) – The city of Aden, under is the control of Saudi-led coalition, witnessed a general strike on Tuesday in protest against the rapid collapse of the local currency and skyrocketing the prices of everyday items.

Eyewitnesses reported that markets and shops were completely closed, as citizens were unable to purchase their needs due to the soaring exchange rate of the dollar, which is approaching 2200 riyals.

They added that the severe economic crisis, the suspension of salaries, and the deterioration of essential services such as electricity and water have exacerbated the suffering of the people, leading merchants to close their shops.

They pointed out that the protest did not address the suffering of employees, teachers, and the large segment of the impoverished, with no actions or reforms taken by the government loyal to Saudi-led coalition.

Earlier, the Southern Money Exchangers Syndicate in Aden city, called for a comprehensive strike in the banking and commercial sector to protest the sharp collapse of the local currency and the deterioration of economic conditions in the city.
