NICOSIA, Nov. 25 (YPA) – Dozens of people in the city of Larnaca in Cyprus Island held on Monday a protest rally against the American military presence in the south of the island.
The demonstration, the participants held up banners that reject turning Cyprus into a military base for America and NATO.
They denounced the military cooperation between the Greek Cypriot administration and the United States.
Meanwhile, the Cyprus Peace Council issued a statement calling for an end to the war in the Middle East in order to achieve peace, security and stability in the region.
The statement expressed its solidarity with the people of Palestine and Lebanon, in light of the Israeli aggression.
In a speech during the rally, the Secretary General of the Popular Progress Party of Workers, Stephanos Stephanou, said that they participated in the demonstration because they want Cyprus to be a bridge for peace in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Stephanou stressed that they rejected turning the island into a war base, a spy center, or an arena for military training against neighboring countries.
He affirmed that the infrastructure, ports, airports, land and airspace in Greek Cyprus should serve the local population and not the Americans, Israelis, or any third parties.
The rally was organized by a movement called the Cyprus Peace Council in front of the Land, Maritime and Port Security Centre, with the participation of leftist groups and peace activists from across Greek Cyprus.
