Security Council warns of deteriorating humanitarian conditions in Gaza, calls for increased aid
NEW YORK, Nov. 19 (YPA) – Members of the UN Security Council have called for an increase in humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, warning of the deteriorating conditions in the Strip.
A Security Council session was held yesterday evening, Monday, at a high diplomatic level, at the request of Britain, under the title “Ending the War and Establishing Lasting Peace.”
The UN Secretary-General’s envoy for the Middle East peace process, Tor Wensland, said that the region has reached a grim crossroads, more than a year after the spread of the conflict in Gaza and bloodshed, and he appealed to the international community to move quickly to stop this and change course.
The UN official’s statements came before the Security Council in New York during a session chaired by British Foreign Secretary David Lammy, whose country presided over the Security Council for this month.
Wensland initially focused on the humanitarian situation and described it as a nightmare, noting that the Israeli war “caused widespread destruction and huge losses.”
He described the humanitarian situation in Gaza as catastrophic, particularly in northern Gaza, describing what is happening as “apparently a disturbing disregard for international humanitarian law.”
The UN official warned of the consequences of the Israeli decision and Israel’s adoption of laws prohibiting UNRWA operations.
