Malnutrition disaster is worsening in Saudi-led coalition-controlled areas in Yemen: UNICEF

ADEN, Aug. 19 (YPA) – A recent report by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has revealed the worsening malnutrition disaster in areas of Yemen under the control of the Saudi-led coalition.

The technical work team for the Integrated Interim Classification of Food Security in Yemen said, “The number of children under the age of five who suffer from acute malnutrition or wasting increased by 34 percent compared to the previous year in all areas under the control of the Yemeni government (the pro-coalition government).”

“This affects more than 600,000 children, including 120,000 suffering from acute malnutrition,” the technical work team added.

The technical team confirmed in a statement issued by UNICEF yesterday, Sunday, that this sharp increase is due to the combined effect of disease outbreaks (cholera and measles), high rates of food insecurity, limited access to safe water, and economic decline.

The report expected that the malnutrition situation in the coalition-controlled areas would witness dangerous levels until next October.

The government loyal to the coalition is facing a state of popular discontent due to its practice of corruption and plundering public money amid an economic collapse that has led to increasing poverty and famine among citizens.
