US aircraft carrier arrives in South Korea

SEOUL, June 22 (YPA) – A nuclear-powered U.S. aircraft carrier, the Theodore Roosevelt, arrived in the coastal city of Busan in South Korea on Saturday.

The South Korean Navy announced that the Theodore Roosevelt to hold joint military exercises this month with the host country and Japan, according to Reuters.

In August 2023, the leaders of the countries agreed at the Camp David summit to hold annual military exercises as they condemned China’s “dangerous and aggressive behavior” in the South China Sea, the disputed waterway.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has visited North Korea this week for the first time in 24 years and signed an agreement, including mutual defense, with leader Kim Jong Un.

This was one of Russia’s most significant moves in Asia in years, which Kim described as amounting to an alliance.

The visit comes seven months after a trip to South Korea by another US aircraft carrier, the Carl Vinson, in a show of expanded deterrence against North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs.
